:a : For proper function of the preloaded bolted joint the following condition for the clamp length l_t shall be fulfilled 

(l_{g, max} + 2P) < Ʃ_t < (l_min – P – m_max), where P is the pitch of thread and m_max is the maximum nut height according to table 4

The values of Ʃ t_min and Ʃ t_max specified in table A. 1 are within this range

The Ʃ t_max values are specified on the condition that the minimum bolt protrusion beyond the unloaded nut face shall be 1P.
